Kathak - Kalka-Bindadin Gharana of Lucknow
Our story

The School

At Nritta Katha, we dance to find ourselves. It begins as a pursuit of passion and becomes something quieter, a space within, made of rhythm and breath, where you can set the world down and come home to yourself. I can be your guide, but the journey is yours.

What we stand for

Founding principles

01

Guru–Shishya ParamparāThe living oral tradition

The principle. Honoring the unbroken, oral transmission of classical artistry passed down directly from Guru to disciple through generations. We recognize that Indian classical arts are a living stream that cannot be fully captured in writing or notation; they must be lived, breathed, and absorbed through direct guidance and lineage.

The practice. Serving as a dedicated custodian of the Kalka-Bindadin Gharana of Lucknow. All instruction is directly anchored in the teachings, intricate rhythms, composition vocabulary, and expressive storytelling soul passed down from Pandit Birju Maharaj and Pandit Jaikishan Maharaj.

02

Pursuit of passion over obligationPrayas & Abhyas

The principle. Sparking an intrinsic, lifelong love for the grace, vitality, and technical beauty of Kathak, ensuring that the necessary rigor of training is experienced as an inspiring pursuit of passion rather than an obligation. We believe that earnest, devoted beginnings (prayas) and sustained, sincere practice (abhyas) are not chores, but pathways to developing authentic artistic confidence, elegance, and precision.

The practice. Tailoring introductory frameworks (Parichay) to capture the imagination of learners. We transform the mastery of foundational technique — footwork (tatkar), spins (chakkars), and hand gestures (mudras) — into a rewarding, joyful journey where students actively choose to become lifelong devotees of the art form.

03

Cognitive development, the inner metronome & the poetic outletMind, rhythm & expression

The principle. Utilizing classical dance as a vehicle for comprehensive cognitive development and emotional maturity, expanding far beyond physical mechanics to enrich both the mind and the spirit. The practice demands an intricate balance of mental precision and creative freedom, transforming structured technique into deep personal expression.

The practice. Structuring instruction to build numerical cognition through the mathematical precision of rhythm (taal), while simultaneously awakening the dancer’s inner metronome — instilling an instinctual, precise awareness of time and rhythm. Dancers leverage this rigorous foundation as a profound poetic outlet, rendering the expressive storytelling traditions (abhinaya) and complex rhythmic literature of the Kalka-Bindadin Gharana of Lucknow into a living canvas for soul-stirring communication.

04

Communal sanctuary & shared responsibilityFamilies and school together

The principle. Building an interconnected community where families and the school synergize to support the student’s artistic journey.

The practice. Integrating parents actively into the early stages of practice and operationalizing collective family investment through active event volunteerism, ensuring that major showcases are a celebration of shared community effort.

The Kalka-Bindadin Gharana of Lucknow

The tradition we teach

The Kalka-Bindadin Gharana of Lucknow is known for its lyrical grace, subtle expression, and refined abhinaya. Students progress from the foundations — footwork, bols, and chakkars — toward the full solo repertoire and choreographed group compositions, learning both the technique and the spirit of the form.
